a little something halloweeny

Alone in the Castle Library

I am enmeshed

in this tenebrous castle,

with all its ledges,

hidden stairs, parapets

shrouded in darkness

day and night,

rueful clouds, pinprick

stars, torch-light shadows

and a thousand tiny noises.

The creaking, of course,

and soft jangling of chains

in unexpected places-

the master’s bedchamber?

Soft sighs creep below

the surface of the louder

sounds, carried

into this library

by an ever present draft,

always cooler than the night

air, always breathing

across the nape of my neck.

I am driven to distraction.

The words swim about

in the flickering light,

losing all sense and meaning.

And a door slams.

Footsteps on the stairs.

In the hall. At the door.

The torches are blown dark

by a sudden gust and the chamber

door slowly creaks open.

Someone enters, candle in hand,

face in shadow, hissing

a single lugubrious syllable.
