good morning, sunshine

it is national poetry month.

we poets are supposed to write a poem a day for 30 days. someone usually reminds us of this on the 8th or 9th, so it never happens.

but we were thinking, maybe it would be more useful to become poetry missionaries for a month. spread the word.

we suggest that you pick one of your friends who seems a likely convert and buy them a book of poetry. no, not keats. no, not byron. same goes for wordsworth, longfellow, whitman, etc. the classics will only further entrench them against the idea of poetry.

buy them something that will invite them in. we suggest picnic, lightning by billy collins.

say what you want about mr. collins, but the muggles love him. we have personally infected…er, uh…converted two heathens using that book. plus, look at the work he did while he was poet laureate. has anyone else done as much to spread the gospel? they should have given him a decade…

anyway, give it some thought. pick a likely friend and match them to a book that will invite them in. a book that will instill them with a life-long love…

ok, bullshit aside, find them a book they will actually read, maybe even finish.

and now, this is for you, because we love you and you’re so thoughful to buy your friend a book of poetry!
